5 Things To Do In Berlin With Children

During my recent visit to Berlin with Jet2CityBreaks, when we flew from Leeds/Bradford to Berlin Schoenefeld Airport on their inaugural flight, I took in the beautiful and breathtaking history of a city I've never really considered previously. Today I wanted to share some things you can do with the children if you decide to take a family trip there. Of course there is the usual Sealife Centre, Legoland and Madame Tussauds, but if you're looking to introduce your kids to a more authentic experience, here are my top suggestions.

The DDR Museum is definitely top of my list of places to take the children. It is a fantastic interactive museum that actually encourages its visitors to get involved and touch as much as they like. Whilst learning about what life was like for Berlin citizens in the GDR, you can rummage through drawers, drive a Trabi and even smell what what a GDR kitchen smelt like! This is definitely a great way to introduce children to museums and learning without them even realising it, and something you can enjoy too!

Computerspielemuseum (Computer Museum) is a great place to take children who are interested in gaming. Featuring games from Pac Mac to modern day games, there are over 300 exhibits that invite you to sit down and play games you would not usually get the chance to try. You can try vintage arcade games, play with an classic joystick or even Pong - a vintage table tennis game. Probably best for over seven's, it is good to note that under 5's can enter for free. It is a great way to kill a couple of hours and give your children something a bit different to do once they are tired of the usual sightseeing.

If you've had enough of being stuck indoors then a great idea for children is to hire bikes. You can visit different areas of the city, depending on what you are interested in, and it is a lovely way to see the sights without standing in traffic to get there. Whilst older children can ride their own bikes, younger children can also be taken along in a trailer or child's seat, meaning nobody has to miss out. There are cycle lanes all over the city, with more being put in, and if you're not confident going round on your own there are a whole host of tours you can book.

Another way to see the city is by water and take a river cruise. The kids will love sailing down the water and spotting the sites and you will get a few minutes to rest your legs and feel the breeze in your hair. It's a little known fact that Berlin waterways have more bridges than Venice and on a warm day it's a different way to take in the sites.

For a great view of the city there are two places to go - up the TV Tower or into the Reichstag. I would recommend the Reichstag for children as there is a lot more freedom for them to move about and look around and I think smaller children wouldn't really get much from the TV Tower. Not only is the Reichstag free but it is extremely buggy friendly, so great for families. Do make sure you book in advance though, and try and go at less busy times so the children don't have to suffer the crowds.

*Bonus Tip: Spot the bears! There are 100 'Buddy Bears' all over the city - for a bit of extra fun, why not see how many you can spot whilst you travel around!
