Travel: Ideas for your next UK City Break

If you’re planning a weekend break with your partner, friends or family, then the UK has plenty of city destinations which can cater to a wide range of preferences. Whether you are looking for great nightlife, a city with a rich history or just fancy a bit of sightseeing, we’ve put together a few ideas to help you plan the best weekend break you can imagine.

The great thing about city breaks is that you can often book them relatively cheaply via booking comparison websites, so whatever your budget, you’re sure to find somewhere to match.

Love sightseeing? Where else but London!

When it comes to sightseeing there really isn’t anywhere better to go than London. Even if you’ve visited several times before, there’s bound to be something new that you haven’t seen or experienced, whether it’s seeing a new landmark, visiting a new museum or catching a show at one of the many theatres.

If you haven’t visited before, then a river cruise is a great place to start. The Thames Clipper will take you on a journey down the Thames river where you will see sights such as Big Ben, Tower Bridge, The London Eye, The Houses of Parliament and much more. You could even use a river cruise to travel around the city instead of using the Underground!

History buff? Try York!

King George VI once said that “the History of York is the history of England" – and if you visit it’s easy to see why! One of the UK’s most historic cities, York has a rich and varied history of Romans, Saxons and Vikings which have characterised the city.

Surrounded by its ancient walls and laced with Medieval streets and buildings, there is plenty to see and do, including the York Minster which demonstrates Medieval architecture, the Jorvik Centre which documents the Vikings’ habitation of the city and The National Railway Museum which is home to historic locomotives of Britain.

If you like to mix history with mystery, you can also go on one of the city’s ghost walks which will help you explore and learn some of the spooky history of the birthplace of Guy Fawkes.

Just looking for a good night out? Visit Manchester!

Vibrant, energetic and full of character, Manchester truly offers something for everyone with a diverse range of cool, cutting edge bars, homely pubs and impressive music venues that attract world-renowned names.

After a day shopping in the city’s wealth of high street brands and independent shops, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing places to eat and drink. The city’s famous Northern Quarter is jam-packed with an eclectic choice of restaurants, modern cocktail bars and friendly pubs and cafes. Everything is in close proximity too, so it’s especially convenient if you aren’t the sort of couple or group who like to stay in just one place!

Hopefully these ideas will give you some great inspiration for your next city break!
